Emma Lazarus is best known for her poem "The New Colossus," an excerpt of which is inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty. The daughter of a prominent and affluent Sephardic Jewish community in New York City, Emma never lost sight of the plight of her less fortunate Ashkenazic co-religionists in Eastern Europe. Her poetry expresses her lifelong dedication to social justice. This session will include a close reading of several of her poems, which will provide historical perspective on socially relevant issues of today.
