In our present political moment, the question of how to relate to the government within our liturgy is particularly fraught. In this class, we will look at a series of texts that tell the story of how Jews throughout history have related to secular governments that held power over them. We will then look at how the advent of democracy changed the way that Jews thought about praying for the government. And hopefully, we can start to tackle the question of what sort of prayer for the government could possibly apply in our current place and time.
